William ‘Bill’ Adrian Vanderland
October 23, 2022
It is with love and sadness that we celebrate the life and legacy of William (Bill) Adrian Vanderland, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 23, 2022, in his 97th year. Devoted husband for more than 70 years to the late Connie (née Bristow, 2019). Bill will be dearly missed by his daughters Brenda Morgan (Paul) and Barbara Cooper. Predeceased by his sons Bill (the late Susan Scott) in 2021 and Bob (Margo) in 2022.
Bill was a cherished Grandfather to Neil (Leigh), Michelle and Cheryl (Dylan) Vanderland; Leah (Kyle) Blaney, Nicholas (Denise) and Michael Morgan; and Christopher (Jessica), David (Susan) and Steven (Kathryn) Cooper. Much loved Great-Grandfather to Chayse, Jaxson and Willow Vanderland; Decklan Vanderland; Cameron and Stuart Blaney; Colin, Liam and Wesley Morgan; Matthew, Hailey and Caitlyn Cooper; Caleb Cooper; and Baby Cooper. Also missed by son-in-law Paul Cooper. Bill is predeceased by his parents Christian Albert and Freda Vanderland (née St. John), brother Frederick and sister Barbara (Parkinson).
Bill caught the eye of his life-long partner when he trapped his hand in a packing machine at Kellogg’s, while showing off to impress her. After graduating from Queen’s University (Mechanical Engineering, 1949), Bill began his career with the Canadian Pacific Railway. He continued to work for the CPR or its subsidiaries until he retired. Bill and Connie raised their family in the Montreal, Winnipeg and Toronto areas. When they retired and moved to Whitby, Bill could be seen daily riding his bicycle around town. Bill will be remembered for his sharp mind, sense of humour and genuine interest in current events and the lives of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A special thank you to the staff of Arbor Trace for their kindness and compassion.
A funeral service will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 10:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior at 9:00 a.m. Interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery immediately following the service. Bill was my uncle. I have thought of him often and hold his memory in high regard. My most impacting memory was when his brother Fred (my father) was seriously ill in the Haliburton hospital. Uncle Bill appeared unexpectedly with his daughter Barbara to see my dad for the last time. That visit was so typical of Bill and so much appreciated at the time by our family. My other memories are so typical of other's comments - very intelligent, outgoing, a family person and humorous - always humorous. Rest in peace Bill. You lived your life with class. Proud to have had you as family.
