Bill Mahoney
December 16, 2021
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He left this world peacefully after 82 years on December 16, 2021.
Bill was known by many as a respected hockey coach and player. From captain of the Peterborough Pete’s, to a player and coach with the McMaster Marlins, to becoming the head coach of the Minnesota North Stars, his passion for hockey and his teams was inspirational.
After hockey he turned his focus to his Tim Horton franchises and through his hard work and commitment built it into a family business.
He was best known and loved for both his commanding personality and spirited character. Bill made sure his loyalty and love for his friends and family were always his greatest priorities.
Bill was the beloved husband of Doreen, loving father to Jeff Mahoney and Karen Bellehumeur (Dave), and adored grandfather to Julia Bellehumeur and Angie Bellehumeur. Bill will be sadly missed by sister Jo Ann Simmons (late Bill), sisters-in-law Carol Paquet (Larry) and Kay Hickey (Mike) and many nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by loving sisters Patricia (late Carm) and Sandra (late Ray).

So very sorry for your loss. The years growing up with the crew from Huron Hockey School really molded my life as a young girl. Many memories of the Grand Bend place and a fantastic family. My Mom and I send loving condolences at this very difficult time. As O’D and I said - I’m sure Billy and my dad are cheering with a few Grand Mariners up there. ❤️
This is a very sad time ! Like so many I had the privilege to don a PETES jersey with # 10, captain BILL MAHONEY! He enjoyed so many great experiences on his journey through the world of sports, education, business and especially with family and friends. Rest in peace my friend.
My sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies to Doreen, Karen, Jeff and the entire Mahoney family. Bill was my teacher, mentor and friend. I will be forever grateful for Bill's encouragement and support during our years together in the McMaster PE program and at Huron Hockey School. Bill's passion, enthusiasm and contributions to the game he and I both loved was unequaled. So sad to hear the skate blades have been silenced. RIP Bill
Dear Doreen, I offer you my deepest sympathy on the death of your dear husband Bill. My sister, the late Joan Trudeau spoke of you both often and enjoyed many wonderful gatherings at your home in Grand Bend. I enjoyed meeting you on several occasions as well. Be assured of my prayers for Bill and for you and your family as you grieve his loss. May he rest in peace. Sr. Theresa Shannon, RHSJ
Karen and the Mahoney family, So very sorry to hear of your father's passing. Please know my thoughts are with you and yours during this most difficult time.
As a young boy growing up in Lakefield in the 50s, I had the privilege of watching Bill play for and later lead the Petes in the winter and pitch fastball in the summer. He was my first local sports hero. My sincere condolences to Bill's family and friends .
Dearest Doreen and family Tom and I were deeply saddened to read about Bill's passing. We remember him as a welcoming, generous host with a twinkle in his eye. We particularily remeber our visit to you at your Gand Bend cottage with 3 young sons in tow. Bill was paricularily interested in having our oldest play the piano for him. He knew how to make someone feel special. Please accept our sincere condolences and prayers. With Love Mary Catherine and Tom Shannon
My sincere condolences to the Mahoney family on the passing of Bill. Growing up together, we were always competing - be it in hockey, football, baseball or softball. We've lost a champion. May he rest in peace.
Very sad to hear of Bills passing, I worked many years for Bill and Doreen along with Jeff. I was privileged as a young man to have Bill share with me some very good life lessons along with some solid straight forward advice, I respected and carried that advice my whole life since. I will always remember. Thank you Bill. Chris
DEAR Doreen, Karen, Jeff and family, We are sending our love and prayers in remembrance of Bill. Our family has many memories of being franchises and working with your family. The first time we met at a Tim Horton owners dinner, we were quite surprised to find out that you had gone to Saint Peters high school in Peterborough like we did. Rest In Peace Bill. John and Rose Geraghty and family.
It is with much sadness on the hearing of the passing of Bill that I send my deepest and sincerest condolences to Doreen , Jeff and Karen .. I'm not sure that I have the words to effectively capture the impact Bill Mahoney had on my life . Coach, mentor, father figure and simply great guy. For the fortunate there are individuals who have a profound impact who we become. Bill Mahoney's footprint on my character has endured a lifetime. I am and will be eternally be grateful for his presence in my life. Thank you "Slip". You will be missed . God Bless.
Jeff and family Sorry to read that your dad has passed away. It was a pleasure dealing with him over the years. Sending my sincere condolences at this sad time to all of you.
Dear Jeff and Karen So very sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad. The words shared in the obituary paint a beautiful picture of your Dad’s achievements and how he dedicated himself to his family. Thinking of you all at this difficult time.
DOREEN, KAREN, JEFF, I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS. WHILE I MET BILL THRU BUSINESS OVER 35 YEARS AGO AND WE ENJOYED A GREAT BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP: THE FRIENDSHIP WITH YOUR FAMILY IS WHAT I TRULY REMEMBER AND VALUE TO THIS DAY. I BELIEVE THAT ANYONE WHO HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE TO GET TO KNOW BILL, BECAME A BETTER PERSON BECAUSE OF IT. MY GOALIE FRIEND IN LITHUANIA STILL REMEMBERS BILL AND HIS INVOLVEMENT WITH THE YOUNG LITHUANIAN HOCKEY TEAM THAT VISITED LONDON. BILL"S LIFE WAS A LIFE WELL LIVED. HE WILL BE MISSED BY MANY.
Doreen, Karen and Jeff: Bill's picture is my enduring image of a fellow Mac Marlin, a coaching foe, and a lifelong friend. It reminds me of our trip with Clare Drake and Paul Arsenault to the NCAA hockey championships in 1969 in Colorado, where in a small pizza place we decided to establish a Canadian University Hockey Coaches Association. It also reminds me on that same trip of insisting that Bill hang his socks out our hotel room window so that we would survive the night. A lifetime of memories. Love to all your family.
My condolences to all the Mahoney family. I was a classmate of Bill's at St. Peter's High. He was an inspiration to all who knew him, whether it was in the field of academics or sport. He went his way and I went mine, to a Navy career, after St. Peter's. Traveling from Nova Scotia, with my son, so he could attend Bill' hockey school in Grand Bend, was another time to say hello to Bill again. He was the same inspirational and kind person I knew from school. I have fond memories and am sorry for your loss. God Bless.
dear mahoney family, all of peterborough will mourn bill,s passing-he helped my daughter when she attended western & was a frequent guest in my son,s restaurant in peterborough-i watched bill play his first game with the pete,s-a life well lived
I was sad to hear of Bill’s struggles over the last few months. He was my first boss I had. Although at that time I found that he was a bit intimidating, after getting to know him I realized why. He had a presence and a reputation that preceded him, he had to uphold a standard. A standard of hard work and dedication. I seen him as a inspirational business man. If you worked hard and did your job well he would notice. He was always kind to me. Bill built an empire with his son Jeff which we could all see the successful business men and the commitment to the franchise. A family connected, united and well liked in the Tim Hortons family and within the community. I thought I would share this memory I had of him. I am sending out my deepest condolences to the family and friends. May Bill rest in peace.
Bill possessed a great hockey mind and a generous spirit. In addition to his coaching duties at McMaster, Bill was a trusted advisor to the Men's Athletic Council, and helped to shape my own eventual career. I encountered Bill again when he was coaching in the NHL, and volunteered his time at Ontario minor hockey coaching certification seminars. My sincere condolences to the entire Mahoney family.
We are so sorry for your loss. Please know that we are thinking of you and your families and sending our deepest sympathies. You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this great time of loss. Thinking of you all. Peter, Jennette, Elizabeth, Steve and Dave
Doreen, Karen, Jeff, and families: We are so very saddened to hear of Bill’s passing. There is a poem called the “dash” about your life between birth & death! WHAT MEMORIES of Bill’s “dash” – the Pete’s, the pitching battles with Ray Judd, McMaster – an elite player and an elite coach, a great professor of physical ed, Huron Hockey School – the euchre games at the Grand Bend summer home, his NHL coaching career and his success with Tim Horton’s. If ever there was a life well lived, it was Bill’s life. Doreen, Karen, & Jeff and all of your family, our deepest sympathy for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers will always be with you. Janie & Grant Heff
RIP Bill! You're a prime example why the Peterborough Petes are a great advertisement for the city throughout the world especially the players that were born here. You were a great example of the type of people Peterborough produces including a family man, businessman, hockey player or hockey coach, I am sure Roger Neilson is already recruiting you to coach the All-Heaven hockey team against the New Jersey devils.
Doreen and family I am saddened to learn of the passing of Bill. As a team mate of Bill on the first Peterborough Pete's team I saw first hand the love and passion he had to play hockey. He was the most consistent player we had game after game. In our final year Bill was named Captain of the team. He was very proud to be the first Peterborough boy to get that honour. Bill had a very successful and full life. We will all miss him but hold many fond memories of him. Rest in Peace Bill.
I am saddened to hear of Bill’s passing and am grateful to be given the opportunity to pass on my condolences to Doreen, Karen and Jeff. Bill was my mentor. He taught me how to be a student, a teacher and a coach. He taught me how to be a better father, a good friend and to cherish my family. Bill profoundly affected both my career and life and I miss him dearly.
It is with great sorrow that I hear of Bill's passing. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Doreen and family. Bill was the best coach that I had ever played for. He was instrumental in my development on the ice and he may not have known it at the time but my development as an individual away from the game of hockey. It was early in my time at Mac that my father had passed away and Bill helped me navigate those years. For that I will always be thankful. Marlins 1970-1975. Rest in peace Bill.
Our whole family are saddened to learn of Bill's passing, an outstanding brother in law & uncle. Love to the Mahoney family from the Hickeys
So sorry to hear of Bill's passing and would like to send my condolences to Doreen, Karen and Jeff. Bill was a terrific coach and friend and I often think of the great times I had playing for him at McMaster. He was passionate about the game and quite innovative in his approach to it. May he rest in peace.
Doreen, I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I have very fond memories of working together with you and meeting Bill. Sending my thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Mary Ellen Cornelius LDCSB
So sorry to hear of his passing. We spent way too many years apart but Bill’s memory, keen insights, energy and fun-loving approach to life has had a major imprint upon me as one of his “student-athletes” at Mac. Condolences to his beloved family, with whom his spirit goes on. May he Rest In Peace Ken Tyler McMaster Marlins 1970-73

I am sitting here remembering with fondness as a child all the wonderful years my family spent with the Mahoney family. Spending time in Grand Bend and our trip on the train out West and our many fun times at our cottage on Indian River in Warsaw with all mom and dad’s friends. You were such a gentlemen Bill and just want to send condolences to Doreen, Karen, Jeff and the rest of the family from the whole Darling family. Eleanor, Wendy, Alyson and Grant and our families.
Bill’s passing gives me a pleasant walk through time from the mid 40,s at 540 McCannan to recent years in London/Grad Bend.Always a Leader. My condolences to you Doreen & your family.God Bless.Frank Daly.
It is with true sadness that I learn of the passing of my childhood buddy and true friend for more than 70 years. Infused in his soul by his parents were the tenets of fair play, honesty, tenacity and hard work with a bit of Irish humour thrown in for good luck. Complemented by his high school sweetheart and dear wife Doreen and passed on to his children Karen and Jeff. God bless them all. He touched many hearts …….. for the better Frank & Judy Feeley

I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing, it has been a very long time since our paths crossed. He made kinesiology come alive for me during my third year at McMaster and also became a friend. I saw him many years later in Toronto with my sons on our way to an Argos game and he remembered me like it was yesterday. A great teacher, coach and friend. You will be missed
