Kenneth Wayne ‘Ken’ McKaig

In his 76^th year, Kenneth ‘Ken’ Wayne McKaig passed away with caring staff at his side on Friday, January 8th, 2021 at Country Terrace in Komoka. “The Lord has gotten a pure soul today” (Mary). Ken was born with cerebral palsy and was the 10^th of 13 children. He is lovingly remembered by his surviving siblings: Carl (Jackie), Sharon, Darlene and Leda (Jim); and by his large extended family and friends. Predeceased by his parents Harvey and Lottie; his sisters: June, Millie, Pat and Laura; and by his brothers: Gord, Bill, Ray and Jerry.

Ken spent many years living in facilities throughout Southern Ontario. In the early 80s he was able to return to London and moved into Cheshire Homes. He quickly became part of the Cheshire family on Princess Avenue, which grew into a newly built home on Topping Lane. His newfound independence flourished in this family-like environment. Ken was a shining example of not letting his limitations stop his ability to do whatever he put his heart into. He further prospered when he advanced to a motorized wheelchair. This new mode of mobility gave him a level of independence he had never enjoyed before. Heartfelt thanks to Cheshire Staff for all the years of love and support you showered on Ken. You were his Cheshire family.

Hutton House and Community Living London were an integral part of Ken’s life. He enjoyed years of structured programs and activities which enriched his life. His quick wit and charm won him numerous friends everywhere he went. “His laugh was the best, it always made me happy” (Ian). He looked forward to and was so proud to be part of the many volunteer and fundraising endeavours of both organizations over the years. He was awarded many certificates of recognition in appreciation for all his hard work. Our deep appreciation to both organizations for all the years of fun and support you gave to Ken.

For many years, Ken attended a March of Dimes summer camp program at Lake Geneva. Enjoying campfires, canoeing, music and friendship was very special for him. Thank you to March of Dimes Canada and the many camp counsellors happily providing these wonderful experiences.

Ken was a deeply spiritual man and cherished his relationship with Dundas Street Centre United Church. He looked forward to attending as many Sunday services that he could. Thank you for the decades of spiritual guidance and friendship. Ken truly was an inspiration to all who knew him. 

“He was an example to all who were lucky enough to meet him, of what true strength, resiliency and an unwavering positive attitude were. My kids may not have met him, but they will know him. I do believe there is more after we die, and I am certain he is moving on to something great” (Tyler)

Thank you to Dr. Susan McNair and staff at St. Joseph’s Family Medical Centre for the years of care and concern whilst Ken was your patient. Thank you to Dr. Kirk Hamilton and SE Health for your medical and emotional support and care as Ken’s health continued to slowly deteriorate.

Ken’s necessary move to Country Terrace in November of 2019 had a positive impact on his life. Although being fearful at the beginning, it didn’t take him long to transition to LTC life. Ken loved people. He thrived being around others and joined in any activity while making new friends at the same time. This last year has been difficult for everyone. His life at Country Terrace was heavily enriched through the thoughtful and loving care he received from ALL departments. Thank you for the many video visits keeping our connection to Ken which helped us share our feelings and thoughts with each other, especially during his last day. Thank you to Dr. Whynot and nursing staff for the care and attentiveness Ken received while completing his journey.

Cremation has occurred. A memorial service and interment will follow at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation in Ken’s memory are asked to consider the community supporters who impacted his life: Hutton House Foundation, Community Living London, Dundas Street Centre United Church, March of Dimes Canada, or the Ontario Federation for Cerebral Palsy.
