Dr. John ‘Jack’ Carl Duncan McLister

October 10, 2020

The world lost one of its finest on Saturday, October 10, 2020. Dr. John (Jack) Carl Duncan McLister passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his wife and best friend Kathe, and his children, John and Allison.

Jack was born in Windsor, Ontario on January 1, 1947, son of the late Dr. John McLister and Helen (McLean). Jack was devoted to his loving family: the love of his life Kathe; son John; granddaughter Claudia of London; daughter Allison (Chris Jackson); granddaughters Georgia and Juliet of Vancouver; sister Andrea (Doug Boswell); nephew Matthew (Michelle) of Toronto; aunt Elizabeth McLister (’15); cousin Robert McLister (Melanie) of Naples Florida; sister-in-law Sylvia Mousseau (Cleve ‘03); nephew Brandon (Vanessa); and mother-in-law Maria Daichendt of Windsor.

There is so much to celebrate in the lessons Jack left. Those of living life with purpose, remembering to laugh, not sweating the small stuff, making a material difference in others’ lives, and being a life force that naturally attracts everyone. Jack was the best bartender, story- teller, master of ceremonies and friend. He enjoyed having a delicious dinner, a fine drink and a good cigar with close friends. As a member of the London Hunt and Country Club, Jack enjoyed “nine and dine”, shooting and socializing at the trap chalet, as well as some tennis in the past. Jack was noted for his sartorial splendour, always wearing a jacket, pocket pouf, interesting tie and cufflinks.

In addition to his vibrant personality, Jack will be fondly remembered for his dedication to organized dentistry. Jack’s road to dentistry was an unexpected one, but he felt it was the best thing that could have happened to him. It gave him a wonderful life with many friends and adventures that he would have never dreamed of.

Jack completed his undergraduate degree at Detroit’s Wayne State University and earned his DDS at UWO in 1975. Jack excelled both scholastically and socially. From Kennedy Collegiate through to Dental School, where he was class president his last two years, he always held a leadership role and received a host of awards. After graduation he maintained a family practice in London for 36 years with his friend and partner, Dr. Susan Rumble. The relationship with his patients was the best part and what he missed most after retiring in 2011.

Throughout his career, Jack remained active at his alma mater serving for many years on the executive of the UWO Dental Alumni Society. He was presented with the Alumnus of Distinction Award from Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in 2002. Jack continued to teach at the Dental school where he had been part-time Adjunct Clinical Professor for nearly 40 years, since the day after his graduation.

In 2008, his exceptional commitment to Western University was recognized with the John C. McLister Service Award granted to a fourth-year graduate from the Dental school “who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the profession and peers through participation in organized dentistry”. The award is a symbol of what he was all about – dedication to organized dentistry.

Jack’s involvement with organized dentistry began with the London & District Dental Society in 1975, where he served twice as President and then as an active member through to 2011 when he became an Honorary Member. He received the LDDS Dr. Robert A. Brandon Service Award for his contribution to the profession.

Jack served on the executive board of the Ontario Dental Association for many years and became President of the ODA in 2016-17 during its 150th anniversary. Jack’s official ODA biography includes a long list of committees and task forces and he was honoured with the ODA Service Award. In 2019, he received the Barnabus W. Day award for distinguished service by the ODA, one of the most prestigious awards in organized dentistry.

Outside of the ODA, Jack was President and an International Counsellor of the International College of Dentists (Canada) and Chair of the American College of Dentists (Ontario). He was also an Examiner for the National Dental Examining Board of Canada and a founding member of the Thames Valley Dental Study Club (1977) serving three separate terms as its President. He was a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Jack travelled throughout Ontario, Canada and the world as a representative of these organizations. His commitment to the profession he loved will never be forgotten.

There will be a private memorial to honour Jack and a future plan for a Celebration of Life as soon as COVID permits.

A special thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at LHSC and Parkwood Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Jack are asked to consider Diabetes Canada.

I met Jack when i was on ODA council for the first time in 2004. I took an instant liking to him. he was friendly, funny and just a very easy person to get along with. Dear Kathe, Allison, John, and family, My wife, Marilyn, and I just received the news of Jack's passing and would like to join other colleagues and friends in extending our deepest sympathies and condolences. Our association with Jack and Kathe was primarily through the International College of Dentists, where Jack served with such distinction and panache. He will be remembered as a genuine leader whose dedication to his profession was unequalled. As eloquently expressed by so many others, Jack stood out as a true gentleman with a ready sense of humour as well as a ready sense of duty. Perennially admired and respected for his many talents and enviable professional attributes, he will indeed be greatly missed. Brigadier-General (ret) Victor J. Kathe, John, Allison, and family, Claire and I send you our sincerest and most heartfelt condolences. We are deeply affected and saddened by your loss. Our hugs to each of you. I am blessed to have known Jack since 1975. I consider him among the truly finest persons I have ever met. Like the many who knew and cared so much for Jack will agree, we have lost one of the very, very best. I am proud to have many fond memories of terrific times together and feel fortunate, in having had the privilege of knowing Jack as a good and dear friend. Jack was a kind, gentle, and caring soul. As good a person, husband, father, teacher, mentor, friend, as one could ever hope for. Jack could communicate with and relate to anyone, on any level. Jack was fond of a good chuckle and he strived to share happy times with the folks he cared about. We, among those many who loved Jack, will not forget him. "Rest in peace", dear friend. We shall see you on down the road.

~ Darrell & Claire Wells

Dear Kathe, Allison, John, Andrea, Doug and families: As you know I have known Jack my entire life. Uncle Jack and Aunt Helen were the most dear aunt and uncle to me growing up and there was never a better feeling than running into the McLister house (especially at Christmas) and meeting up with Jack and Andrea. My mother was best friends with Helen and my father was best friends with Jack. So growing up, I always thought of you as cousins. There is no easy way to say goodbye to someone as wonderful and charming and witty as Jack. So it is also hard to know what to write here that would even do Jack justice. Jack later became my dentist, but he was always more than that. Suffice to say, he was one of the best people I have ever met in my life. Solid and dedicated and smart. He loved his family and truly cared about other people. I will miss his smile and his laugh. Much love to all of you, I am thinking about you.

It was a huge privilege to have known Jack. When I arrived in London in 1980, it was Jack who reached out to me and asked me to join the Thames Valley Dental Study Club. Getting together several times a year, we shared food, drinks and stories with dental colleagues of like mind. As a young graduate working at University Hospital, Jack allowed me to "moonlight" at his new office on Wellington Road. Everyone in our profession knew that Jack was one of the best dentists in the city and I was so proud to be associated with him. What I remember most were the social events where Jack was always the person people gravitated toward. He was very simply "fun" to be around. Jack always had a story to tell, always listened and was always the consummate professional, both in dress and demeanour. Anne and I will miss you Jack. Thank you for all you have done. Kathe, please accept our most sincere condolences at this sad time. Our thoughts and best wishes are with you and your family.

Kerri and I offer our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to dear Kathe, John, and Allison, to Andrea, and to their families. Learning of Jack's passing was almost incomprehensible. We grieve because we had the opportunity to connect deeply with another person. Jack and I met in Grade 3 at Victoria Public School in Windsor, and he has been a presence in my life ever since though, regrettably, we weren't in as close touch in recent years. Growing up with Jack was an adventure which often went beyond the confines of our small Windsor neighbourhood and even extended to exploring Detroit. When you ventured out with Jack you never knew what might happen, though Jack managed to adeptly handle the unplanned surprises that inevitably popped up. Over the years, whenever our small band of Windsorites would reminisce, tales of intrepid exploits and escapades with Jack were front and centre. Jack was a smart, funny, and classy friend and will be part of my special memories forever.

~ Ron and Kerri Reid

The world has lost a truly beautiful individual. My condolences to the family.

His very effective student leadership during his four years in dental school were but a hint of the remarkable leadership benefits he would achieve in behalf of the profession he has so enhanced. He will be deeply missed .Sincerely, Wes Dunn ..

~ Wes Dunn

Our deepest sympathies to Kathe and the whole family. Jack was always the first person to greet you when ever we would meet, regardless of the occasion. Often, after his warm embrace, he would extend his arms and offer you the best of what hospitality could offer. Truly it was just being with him, knowing him as a friend that was his greatest gift to many of us. For me, it was a simple suggestion that he made to others as he was enjoying a simple dish of pasta, that changed the course of my life forever. That is our Jack. Changing lives of others, in the simplest of ways, always with the best and most honorable of intentions. A gentleman always, a friend forever, now sadly missed.

~ Jane (Nee Allison) Peckham

Dear Kathe, John, Allison and Families Cathy and I were deeply saddened when we heard the news of Jack's passing. We knew he was not well but that final notice is always painful. The loss of a loved one is a pain that never really goes away. I still tear up when I think about my Grandmother, my Father, my Mother or my Brother but over the years the pain is superseded by the more pleasant and enjoyable memories. When we think of Jack we think of good food and lots of it, good stories and laughter, lots of laughter. Whether we were at the ODA convention, the Christmas Brunch at the Hunt Club, desperately trying to make pickerel and toast for breakfast in our kitchen that was as good as the St Clair Inn or floating , yes floating down the Detroit river in Bill Vezina's boat because we had run out of gas we were laughing - laughing until our sides hurt. That will always be the way we remember Jack. I am no Poet and incapable of composing an adequate condolence and so I turn to the Irish who I feel have the best mastery of the English language to leave you two sayings that seem appropriate, if anything can be appropriate at this time. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal Love leaves a memory no one can steal He is not lost our dearest Love Nor has he traveled far Just stepped inside home's loveliest room And left the door ajar Wishing you all the best Doug and Cathy

~ Doug and Cathy Mowbray

May his memory be for a blessing.

Jack - you were a gentleman and a class act. My parents and yours were close friends in Windsor as we were growing up and both families spent a lot of good times there and at our cottage at Southampton. My wife, Diane, met you as a patient in London and insisted on driving from Windsor to London after that every time she needed treatment until you retired. Nobody else was allowed to touch her mouth. My last memory of you Jack is the great time we spent together in Augusta Georgia at the Masters tournament in 2010 walking the pristine fairways of Augusta National. Farewell jack.
