William ‘Bill’ Joseph Alere Landry

April 12, 2019

Passed away peacefully, at University Hospital, in London, Ontario, with family by his side, from complications of diabetes, on Friday, April 12th, 2019, at the age of 71.

Husband of Violet, dear father of William Patrick Landry (Trina), Derek Michael Landry (Irene) and Ronald James Landry (Laura).  Loving grandfather of Keaton Landry, Parker Landry, Mason Landry and Alex Landry.  Loved by his sister Gloria Boudreau and brother-in-law Glenn Lanteigne.  Predeceased by his sister Diane Landry, and parents William Joseph and Dorilla Landry.

Bill was born in Moncton, New Brunswick on September 15, 1947.   He moved to Valcartier, Quebec to live with his Aunt Alva and Uncle Vinaigre, and was in the Canadian Armed Forces.  It was here where he met his future wife, Violet, at the age of 16.  He joined the military in 1966 and was stationed in Clinton, Ontario.  Bill was transferred to Trenton, Ontario, was promoted to officer, and was given a chance to go to the University of Victoria in British Columbia.  He was an air weapons control officer at NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) in North Bay before leaving the military and starting his own business in stereo’s and television (NORCAN TV).  Bill moved to Toronto to work in the computer software field until he retired in 2005.

Following his retirement, Bill enjoyed his time with his grandchildren, and watching them grow up.  He enjoyed fishing and sports.  He played football in high school and University.  His three boys played the sport of hockey, and he enjoyed helping them out on and off the ice.  In his retirement years he would often be found at a hockey rink, baseball field or swimming pool watching his grandchildren play the sports they loved.

He was a kind man who always had a positive view on life.  He never complained about anything and when asked always said he “was fine”.  He was polite with everyone around him, right to the end.  He will be truly missed and will continue to be with us in our hearts and minds.

A private celebration of Bill’s life will be conducted at a later date.  Memorial donations to Diabetes Canada would be appreciated by the family.

Bill was a kind, sweet and gentle man whom I had the privilege to call a companion and a dear friend since 2004. He took great delight and interest in his children and grandchildren, both natural and those he considered his "adopted" family and never failed to speak about their accomplishments, and to ask about them. His positive outlook on life, his sense of humour, his acceptance of other people's quirks and foibles, his readiness to look at the positive side of every situation, his altruistic and generous nature, his love of family, his deep caring for all creatures big and small, his loving humanity towards all, and so much more - all this made him an important part of many people's lives, and he'll be remembered with love, laughter and affection. Bill was and will remain in my heart and in my thoughts, a happy, positive and important part of my life.

Uncle Willie~Bill. 💙 Fortunate to have met him upon sad circumstances of the illness and loss of his sister Chris, in Calgary in 2007, my "other mother". He warmed my heart. The distance and time from that moment never seemed to seperate. I would call and or write every few months. He told me he loved the hand written letters. ❣ When we met, he slept on the couch and I on the floor in the living room and i nattered at him at most length. Most Uncles would have fallen asleep, not him, he just kept on being there. It was the support I was willing to open heartedly welcome from then on in. His listening ear, his kind warm words, and always always ,encouraging understanding support.🙏 Knowing of his loss to this world, I can only hope he knows the love felt by him and never ever to be forgotten. I know he's at peace and that he deserved. Love and a great big hug.

I didn't get to see Bill often, but every time I did he left a positive lasting impression on me. If I know anything about him from those experiences, it's that he is above all kind. My condolences go out to the Landry's, Bill will be missed.

Bill Sr. is one of the few people that I knew my life. I often visited Bill Sr. & my sister Violet during the summers growing up, when my parents would drop me off to spend time with their kids, Bill Jr., Derek and Ron who were all around the same age as me. I have vivid memories of Bill Sr, in North Bay and Toronto, always thinking of the next big trend from TVs, to electronics, to computers. As I go through 35mm slides that my father Patrick gave me, beautiful memories sustain and bring comfort during this time. According to my father who met Bill Sr. when we was a young man entering the military, he went by the nickname "Punchy", because of his grand stature and natural strength. Bill Sr. was always a big gentle giant to me and never had a bad thing to say about anyone. Please accept my deepest condolences and know that my thoughts are with you all during this time.
