Sara Galsworthy

Peacefully at Victoria Hospital, after a short battle with lymphoma, on Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 in her 80th year. Sally was deeply cherished and is profoundly mourned by her husband, Peter Galsworthy; daughter Alice Galsworthy; grandsons Isaac and James Timmins; by their father Michael Timmins and his wife Michelle Lundy; by Michael’s mother Arlene Timmins and her partner Roberta Stemp; by Sally’s cousin Becky Toole and her husband Edward Toole in North Carolina, and by many other relatives, friends and neighbours. Sally was predeceased by her beloved daughter Karen Galsworthy, who died at age 17 in 1981, and by her beloved granddaughter Sadie Galsworthy, who died at age 23 in 2015. Sally will be remembered by many of her colleagues in the faculty of Medicine and in her former Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Western Ontario. Sally retired from research on Listeria monocytogenes and from her teaching duties in 2003. Since then, she has volunteered her time on the board of several organizations, including the Memorial Society of London and Life*Spin. Sally loved life dearly and was an avid grower of vegetables and flowers. Dr. Sara Galsworthy, as she was called professionally, was an outstanding teacher; in addition she was a very good and compassionate listener, which made her a confidant for many of her students with personal problems. Cremation has taken place. There will be a private burial of her ashes. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Saturday, September 23rd, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the London Health Sciences Foundation, Mission Services of London, Life*Spin or to a charity of your choosing. The family is profoundly grateful to the excellent and compassionate care provided by the doctors, nurses and staff of University Hospital and Victoria Hospital. Sally would also want at this time to thank the surgeons at University Hospital and at St. Joseph’s Hospital for the joint replacements that made her retirement years so much more enjoyable.

Sally and I were roommates our sophomore year at Pomona College in Claremont, California. She was my best friend at Pomona. Her kindness, good humor, and insight brought out my best qualities, qualities that I did not even know that I had. My condolences to her family and friends. We have lost a truly fine human being.
I was Sally's secretary for 3 years when she was Assistant Dean in the Graduate Studies faculty in the 1980s. She was like a breath of fresh air - serious and effective in dealing with students and academic matters, and wonderfully impatient with the bureaucracy (often it's the other way round). It was always a lot of fun when Alice, who was then a teenager, would drop by the office. Apart from being a great person to work for, Sally was a truly kind person who treated everyone with respect. I was very saddened to learn of her passing. Alice, Peter, and all the family, my heart goes out to you, and you're in my thoughts and prayers.
Very fondly remembered for her love of gardening. My deepest sympathies for Peter and family.
Sally was a wonderful boss and mentor and I considered her my friend. She took a big risk in hiring me as her lab technician since I had been out of the field for several years and knew nothing about her work or procedures or working with mice. She was a patient and caring instructor and combined fun with the work. It was my pleasure to know her and learn from her. My deepest sympathy to Peter and family. Dear Peter and family, We were saddened to find out the sad news. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Sally was a wonderful and highly respected colleague. She was always very helpful and insightful in our efforts to establish the BMSc program. Her dedication and support were appreciated by all of us in the basic medical sciences departments.

Dear Mr. Galsworthy and Family, I had the pleasure of working with Sally for a number of years. She will be dearly missed by faculty, staff and students. She provided kind guidance to countless students and an invaluable service to the university as researcher, administrator, educator and colleague to her faculty peers. Heartfelt condolences to you and your family at this difficult time and may you find comfort in the knowledge that so many of us will remember her fondly, too.
Dr. Galsworthy was one of the first two female professors that I had in my undergraduate studies. It was her influence that guided me to pursue the study of microbiology and immunology. She was wonderful and very kind and always had time to chat. My deepest condolences in your loss of a mother,a grandmother, a partner and a friend. Her memory will always be treasured and safe in my heart.

When I arrived at Western Sally was one of a group of Biologists and Microbiologists that welcomed and mentored me. She was thoughtful, passionate and enthusiastic about the intellectual life. I hold on to her thoughts each day. My sympathies to Peter and Sally's family. She is not forgotten.
