Margaret Anne Hill

After living a full life with elegance and grace along with illness, on June 26th 2017, in her 67th year. Born in Parry Sound Ontario. Beloved wife of Dr. Julian Oates for 36 years. A much loved mother of David Luke Oates, daughter of Margaret Gertrude Hill, and sister of Sherry Hill, both of Ottawa. Pre-deceased by her father John (Jack) Hunter Hill. Anne attended UWO and graduated with an MA in psychology in 1976. Anne worked in the Developmental Service Worker program of the Human Services Division of Fanshawe College. She was passionate about teaching and was loved by her students. Several became life-long friends. She was an educational innovator and advocated for research-based curriculum change. She was deeply involved in research on the use of assistive devices for students with developmental disabilities. She met Julian at UWO and they married in 1981. David Luke arrived in 1988. Anne loved reading, gardening, travel, cooking, hiking, biking, skiing, playing the piano, and meditation. Above all, Anne had a beautiful heart and a natural generosity that was impossible to miss. Sincere thanks to the many doctors, nurses, and staff at the LRCC and LHSC who have been involved with her care over the past months and years. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London. A celebration of Anne’s life will be conducted at First – St. Andrew’s United Church, 350 Queens Avenue, London on Tuesday, July 4th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.

Such deep passion for learning and for family. Anne was generous, caring and committed. She was one of a kind.
I just found out about Anne's death today when I was at Hospice. I lead a meditation group there that Anne had attended. I met Anne many years ago through our Buddhist teacher, Karma Yeshe Wangpo. I will miss her. My sincere condolences to her loved ones. My heart goes out to you all. My heart goes out to Anne. May you rest in peace, dear one.
Dear Julian and family, We extend our deepest condolences to you on the loss of Anne. She will be remembered from coast-to-coast, and most deeply in your hearts.
From early childhood during the summers on Huckleberry island, Anne was always the epitome of beauty, grace and compassion to those of us around her. We all fell in love with her and respected and admired her wisdom, kindness and understanding of the human condition. Though our paths crossed less frequently in latter years, her memory and inspiration have remained.
Anne was both a teacher and a mentor to me. I graduated from the then MRC Program in Dec. 1978. Anne and I kept in touch and she later offered me the opportunity to teach one of her courses in the DSW Program. I was scared and honored. She made certain that I was well prepared and feeling more confident. Her philosophy on education was about integrating knowledge into everyday situations- not rote learning of facts. She was a kind, gracious, multi-talented lady. Her death is a loss for her family, friends, colleagues, students and the community. She was a wonderful advocate for the best possible outcomes for all. Her influence will be missed but not forgotten. I will always remember "The Six Thinking Hats" by E. Bono.
Our sincere condolences to Julian and David Luke on the loss of beautiful deeply spirited Anne. We have been neighbours for over 25 years and shared good times and laughter on our lawns, in our homes and on the golf course. We shall miss her warm smile, positive approach to life and her sincerity. May your many fond memories of Anne sustain you.
I am shocked and very saddened at Anne's passing. I have fond memories of our times together - Anne's dedication to teaching, to innovation, to students who face challenges, and to the role of assistive technology in giving students the means to engage, to learn, to access opportunities. She made a difference. My condolences to her family...Anne will be deeply missed.
So sad to hear of the passing of a colleague at Fanshawe who displayed such integrity and passion in her work with children and adults in the DSW field as well as with colleagues at Fanshawe. She will be missed.
Such sad news! Anne was one of my teachers back in 1979! She was so kind, compassionate, creative and intelligent. My deepest condolences to all of her family and friends.
Anne was one of the most passionate people I have ever met...for learning, for understanding, for making a difference in the world. She had amazing generosity and a gift for hospitality, and such enthusiasm for life. Over the past few years we would get together to share food and ideas and books....always an enriching experience. I will miss her deeply. I am disappointed that I will be travelling on the day people come together to honour her and cannot change this commitment. I will be thinking of her family and friends particularly then.
