John ‘Jack’ Smith

January 17, 2016

Peacefully, surrounded by family at Victoria Hospital on Sunday, January 17, 2016, John (Jack) A. Smith, in his 82nd year.  Beloved husband and best friend for 53 years to Eleanor.  Greatest Dad to Cathy and Mark Reeves and Paul and Kelly Smith.  Awesome Pop to Matthew and Lucas, Meagan (Chris) and Justin (Mary).  Great-grandfather to baby Jackson.  Son-in-law of Florence Wright.  Dear brother of Don and Dolly, Reg and Judy, Roy and Betty and Jerry and Diane.  Predeceased by brothers Ken, Harold, Bob and Frank.  Also survived by many in-laws, nieces and nephews.  After 42 years at the London Free Press, Jack enjoyed his 21 years of retirement – many of those years working as a starter at the Highland Golf and Country Club.  The Leafs have lost one of their most loyal fans!  Many thanks to nurse Jenn and the many other nurses and doctors who provided excellent care.  Cremation has taken place.  As per Jack’s request, there will be no funeral.  A visitation will be held on Friday, January 22, 2016 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London.  If desired, donations to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

We are so sorry to hear about Jack. We have good memories from curling days at the Ivanhoe with Jack and his friends. Quinton Road won't be the same without his smiling face and friendly wave. He always had a funny story and loved to chat when we ran into him. He'll be missed - a true gentleman!!

On behalf of my brother Ken, Richard Cowburn and I , ( Jack's former Oakridge paper boys from the 60's) you have lost a great man. Being our supervisor we always knew we had to be the best and Jack brought out the best in us. Meeting Jack again at Highland it was fun to get together and tell stories of our younger years. We will all miss Jack. Our deepest sympathy to the family. Ron Fenney

Eleanor & Family Jack will be sadly missed by all of the Professional Shop staff here at Highland Country Club. He was truly a great team member to work with. Dear Eleanor & Family, It is with great sadness that we found out of Jack's passing. He was the best neighbour anyone can have. We will miss his smile, his sense of humor and the many chats we had on his impeccable lawn. Sincere condolences to you and your family.

~ Réjeanne & Maurice Fortin

To say I am so sorry Eleanor would be a gross understatement. Jack was an amazing guy who encouraged me to retire because I "would wonder how I ever found the time to work" and he was so right. He never knew how much those words meant to me. I retired. Jack was never too busy to share his time. Chats on the lawn were a highlight of my Shawn's day and even when Shawn got sick, Jack brightened his day. I could go on, but no, suffice it to say that although you can't see it now, things will get easier.

We sure were glad to have visited him a few times in the hospital, we were reminissing about the times we had spent at your house on different occasions .
