William MacDougall

January 26, 2013

William (Bill) MacDougall died on Saturday, January 26th, 2013, at Extendicare (London), after a long battle with cancer. He was born to the late Norm (2001) and Doreene (2011) MacDougall, August 16, 1945 in London, Ontario.  Bill married Margaret MacKay in 1971, and the two raised their family in London until moving to St. Joseph, Ontario in 1997. Bill is survived by four children: Scott, Brad (Josée), Keith (Alana) and Mary (Rob), all of London, Ontario and three grandchildren: Anna, Alex and Evelyn. Bill was predeceased by his sister Maureene Heal and her son Eric (both 1983). Bill was a loving husband and father who brought passion and creativity to everything he did.  He loved the water, sunsets and boating, spending as much time as he could with family and friends on Lake Huron.  Late in life, he and his wife were happiest during winter playing golf in Port Charlotte, Florida. Bill was a successful entrepreneur throughout his life, retiring (for the first time) in 1991, and enjoyed dreaming up projects that benefited his family, those he worked with and his community.  In 2004, Bill joined Bluewater Council and thoroughly enjoyed advocating for his municipality. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, where the funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, January 30th, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Graham Keep officiating. Cremation to follow with private inurnment at St. Peter’s Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Brain Tumour Foundation.

Marg and family, my deepest sympathy to you all. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Macdougall in 1999, I had started selling insurance and he appreciated my help, my advise when it came to his home and auto insurance. He trusted me and still insured with me, I looked up to him. He was a nice, positive, respectful, businessman. RIP

~ Connie Medeiros

Our sincere condolences to you Marg and your lovely family. Although we have known Bill, Marg and the family for a mere 10 years, the warmth and courtesies extended to us have been very heartwarming. Bill was taken away far too young and he fought a hard battle. Do remember that he will never be far away and his passing is not a goodbye. He will always be there for all of you. He is now resting in peace with the ones that have preceded him in a much happier place. We will miss you Bill - RIP!

It is a lonely feeling when you lose a life long best friend. Bill was "best man" at both my weddings and always there to give me support. Gail and I have so many fond memories of the times spent with Bill and Marg. He will always have a place in our thoughts and heart. The best last memory I have of Bill when he was still able to get about was zip lining in Las Vegas and seeing the Grand Canyon. He was still able to have fun. Rest in peace Bill. You have left behind a remarkable family. I am so proud to have been your friend.

~ Steve Dawson and Gail McSpadden

My deepest sympathies Marg and family. Your father meant a lot to so many of us here on the lake. I was truly blessed to be able to spend quality times with Bill walking the shores edge discussing “life” and he referred to it as “it’s many blessing and mysteries”. Your dad was very proud of his family. I really appreciated your dad’s kindness, sense of humor and insights. I learned a lot from him, truly wonderful man. I know he and my father enjoy their talks as well… He is genuinely missed!

~ Joe Gleason

We were sad to learn of the news of Bill's passing earlier today. He was a great friend and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with him golfing, boating and playing tennis. Our fondest memory of Bill and your family was attending his informal Super Bowl party in February of 2011. Despite his frailties, he was a gracious host and overextended himself by force feeding the fire and serving drinks. We were on our way to London to attend the Tuesday visitation, but were stopped by the dense fog which made driving very precarious. We hope you understand that our thoughts and prayers are with you and we have made a small donation in his memory.

~ Bill and Lois Kennedy

Brad, Josee and Family - Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time. We are sure you will have some very treasured memories to last a lifetime.

Dear Marg- So sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts are with you and your extended family at this difficult time.

I have had the fortune of knowing the MacDougall Family for over thirty years. I'm only 36 now. That makes all of the MacDougall's family to me. Through many years, many trips, many weekends, and never enough golf games, my family and I have had the pleasure of knowing Mr. MacDougall, (as I could never really get used to calling him Bill despite his insistence) I knew him as a man, but more so, I knew him through the thousands of stories that his sons and daughter would tell whenever we see them. It usually started with, "did you hear what my Dad is doing?" And it was always captivating. Mr. MacDougall, you will forever be in our hearts and minds and will truly live on as we continue to retell the stories of your life, for decades to come. We love you and the amazing family that you leave behind.

~ Jason, Kim, Ethan and Ava Meyer

Deepest sympathy to the MacDougall family. In my role as board chair for Goodwill, I offer the sincerest of well wishes from the entire board and staff who had the good pleasure of knowing Brad and even Bill. For my part, I can say that I've known Brad a long time through our Goodwill connection and was saddened to hear that you and your family were going through the same journey that I and my sibblings went through with our Dad and Cancer a few years earlier. The long battle no doubt continued to reveal the essence of a man, who from all accounts, was brave, full of light and an explorer open to things to come. May you find comfort in his continued spirit.

~ Melanie McLagan
