Kassie Nakamura
October 8, 2012
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our treasured Mom, aunt and Nana, at University Hospital, London, on October 8th. Kassie, daughter of Koichiro and Morio Sanmiya, was born on July 30, 1921 in Vancouver, BC. She was the beloved wife of the late Mits Nakamura, dearest mother of Vivian and Dr. Bruce Ettinger of San Francisco; Shirley Nakamura of London; Gloria and the late John E. Stevenson of Waskesiu Lake, SK. Much loved Nana of Kate Ettinger of San Francisco. Predeceased by brothers Gus, Tats and Dr. Marm Sanmiya. Also dearly loved by 5 nieces and 5 nephews. Kassie was a very talented and much accomplished lady. She taught for 17 years at Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School and retired at age 65. She managed the Western University Fund Office for 7 years; served 15 years in Christian Education for CGIT groups of Middlesex Presbytery and London Conference, including 4 years as instructor for CGIT leaders. Kassie co-chaired the Alma College Summer School for Leaders of Younger Groups; served as President for Y’Macettes and Y’s Menettes of London; was Regional Director of Y’s Menettes of Ontario/Quebec Region; also International Director of Y’s Menettes of 381 clubs in 42 countries and was in charge of the Y’s Menettes programs for Pittsburgh and Copenhagen International Conventions. She served as an Elder for Metropolitan United Church and was in the Teleministry for 4 years. She was Treasurer for Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Chapter for 6 years and 6 years as auditor. Kassie also served as Treasurer for 4 years with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, District 8 and as President and 4 years as Treasurer for the Board of Directors of the London Condominium Corporation, no. 65. Kassie enjoyed life and loved doing things for other people. She will be forever remembered for her kindness and generosity. We wish to thank CCAC, Home Instead and the University Hospital staff for their wonderful care of our Kassie. The family of the late Kassie Nakamura invite her family and friends to a Celebration of her Life, to be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 1:30 p.m., in the “Great Room” of the Metropolitan United Church, 468 Wellington Street, London. We have lost a great, caring lady with a ready smile and enthusiasm for everything that she became involved in. Heaven will greet her; the sound that you hear is Mits welcoming her ringing one of the dinner bells from his collection. Go in peace Kassie knowing that many here loved you. Sheila and Merv.
My deepest condolences. "Mrs Nakamura" was one of my faovurite teachers dating back to the middle/late 70"s. I fondly remember the huge computer in its own room where she taught us how to keypunch cards for "fortran" and "cobol" at Sir Frederick Bankting Secondary School. She certainly made a very positive impact on my life and helped pave the path that I would pursue in life.
Mrs. Nakamura was one of my favorite teachers at Sir Frederick Banting during the early 80's. She was a warm and caring person and we all enjoyed her class immensely.
Mrs. Nakamura was one of my favourite teachers as well. I have used what I learned in her class almost every day. One year I was in Mrs. Nakamura's computer class and my younger brother was in Miss Nakamura's grade 1 class. What a legacy! My condolences to your family.
It is with deep sadness that I learned of Kassie's passing...she was always a wonderful neighbor, her entire family was a joy to know. My thoughts and prayers are with Vivian, Gloria & Shirley during this time. :(
Dear Shirley, Please accept our deepest sympathies to you and your family for the loss of your mother. What an accomplished, involved lady she was! Christine, Tim and Andrea also send their condolences. Irene and Mario
Thank you for these messages... and as well for those that are yet to come. I also made a webpage to honor and celebrate my Nana. Photos, stories, and video to follow as well as details for the memorial: http://www.ideasthatimpact.org/nakamura.html
Gloria, Shirley and Vivian, We are saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. From reading her obiturary, she must have been an amazing and energetic person. We haven't had the pleasure of getting to know Shirley and Vivian, but we now know where you, Gloria, get your endless energy, caring approach, and kindness from. We are sorry these past months and years have been difficult for each of you. We hope you find peace in the happy memories of your Mom. May the months to come bring all of love, good health, peace and joy. Much love and friendship Sheila and Glenn

Dear Vivian, Shirley, Gloria and families: Please accept my deepest condolences in the passing of your beloved Mom, Kassie. Even after all these years, I still have many fond memories of coming to the Peter Pan Restaurant in London for lunch after music lessons. My sister Dolly and I struck up a friendship with you 3 girls and I think had sleepovers at your home (on Maitland or Piccadily St.) a couple of times. I still can eat with chopsticks and count from one to ten in Japanese, thanks to you girls! Please know you are in my thoughts, at this sad time. Sincerely, Marlene (Kerr) McCormick
