Ion I. Inculet

November 5, 2011

Peacefully, in London, on Saturday, November 5th, 2011, Ion I. Inculet passed away in his 91st year. Loving husband (sixty years) of Marion and dear father of Richard (Nancy), Catherine, and Diana (Dave Simpson). Loving Grandpa of Clayton, Garrett, Alexandra, Ariana, Elena and Corina. Ion was born in Iasi, Romania, and came to North America in 1947, educated as an Electrical Engineer. He recently retired, at the age of 90, from the UWO Faculty of Engineering, as Professor Emeritus, after 47 years at Western. He was Director of the Applied Electrostatics Research Centre, and an internationally renowned Inventor (27 patents), Researcher, and Academician. Free time was filled with family, the cottage on Georgian Bay, classical music, and repairing things with silicone glue and electrical tape. He will be missed for his love of life, family, and his dedication to his profession. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 14th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, with reception to follow. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Ion are asked to consider the UWO Ion I. Inculet Electrical Engineering PhD Scholarship fund being established in his honour. Ion was an outstanding academic, a dedicated engineer, and a wonderful colleague. He was also one of the most creative and inventive scholars I have had the pleasure of knowing during my 22 years at Western. My sincere condolences to his family. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Mrs. Inculet an Family, There is a old saying in life which states that, "if Mother nature does not take us then Father time will". It was Mr. Inculet's time and although we no longer have him physically with us, the memories will remain. I shall remember the many cheerful toasts as well as the stimulating conversations that we had during our many family gatherings over the years. It was a pleasure and a honor to have known him. With my memories.................Norm

I had the chance to meet Professor Inculet at the beginning of my graduate studies at UWO. I was deeply impressed with his kindness, knowledge, and research in the field of electrostatics. I remember him presenting difficult concepts in a simple and very clear fashion during Applied Electrostatics graduate courses. He had clear ideas on research, and great tenacity to implement them. I appreciated him being kind and helpful to his students and former conationals. My sincere condolences to the family.

Dear Family of Dr. Ion I. Inculet, I am so saddened to hear about passing of Dr. Ion I. Inculet, a wonderful Man that I will remember fondly! I feel honored to have known Dr. Inculet, and worked for, while at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Dr. Inculet was a Legend in his field, and a Beautiful Human Being! I feel very privileged and grateful that Dr. Inculet shared his amazing life story, from Romania to Canada, with me. I found that story fascinating and am proud to have known a man of such a caliber! My Condolences go out to the Family! Best, Sandra Vilovski-Anjoli

Dear Richard, My condolences to you and your family at this sad time. You may not remember me, but we were playmates on Montarville Street, Ste. Foy back in the early 60's. I recall we learned to ride two wheel bikes about the same time. Once again, so sorry about your father. Kind regards.

Dear Family, Ion I. C. Inculet died partly, because - besides you - an enormous number of persons will preserve his spiritual memory. Tenacious, he dedicated all his life to science and education. (For decades, Ion was the most prominent Romanian scientist from his generation, working abroad.) His largest contribution was devoted to a new branch of electrical knowledge: the applied electrostatics. The Romanian Academy offered him the title of honorary member. Benevolently, Ion offered his delicate support to hundreds of young scientists or students, not only with Romanian origins. A peculiar case was his generous cooperation with my research team from ICPE-Iasi: he offered us the chance to continue his research regarding the pseudo-electret filters and a license for the electrostatic equipment for crop sprayers. As cultivated people, the young Ion and his brother Georgel conducted the erection of a marvelous church near Iasi, where their parents are buried. (I will try to describe his diversified activity in a much larger paper in the professional magazine of Romanian electrical engineers.) An exemplary husband and father, Ion pursued the attitudes of his father – Ion C. Inculet, the president of the first parliament in Eastern Moldova (Bessarabia), member of many Romanian governments and member of the Romanian Academy – and of his mother – the princess Ruxandra Cantacuzino-Bashota. I’m confident all the young followers of prof. Ion I. C. Inculet – his son and daughters included – will carry on his life model and his luminous image, for generations.

Dear Family, Ion was on my advisory committee when I was a PhD student at Western 20 years ago. Although we became colleagues later, I always called him "Professor Inculet" out of respect and habit. Ion has been a role model throughout my career. I still remember vividly that when I thanked him for a good idea and/or advice (he got so many of them), his reply was always: "this is what I am here for" - along with a smile. It was very sad that he left us and his beloved research, yet you would be proud of him because he made a difference for many students just like myself. May Ion rest in peace!

We are very sorry to hear of Ion's passing and please accept our heartfelt condolences. Ion was an excellent scientist and an engineer of immense talents. He was passionate of the subject of "applied electrostatics" and made substantial contributions to the field. His enthusiasm for electrostatics has ignited the passion for research among young and bright individuals. Electrostatic community will miss him and we will cherish his contributions and remember him forever. May his soul rest in peace!

Dear Family, I grew up with stories about the role that Inculet family played in the greatest moment of the Romanian history. Later on, I found out about the importance of Prof. Ion I. Inculet's work in the field of human knowledge. I had the privilege of meeting him for the first time in 1994, during his visit to Iasi, and that was a true recomnnection with the history. I've met a bright personality that had dignity, decency and a heart of gold. The memories of the Inculet family's hospitality during my stay in Canada as a student in 1995 are still very precious to me. Dear Ms. Inculet, dear Richard, Nancy, Diana, Dave, Catherine and grandchildren, me and my family will honour your father's leagcy for many years to come, and we're close to you, even from distance, durig this sad and griefing time. May God rest his soul in peace!

Dear Inculet Family...My connection with the Inculet family goes back to Byron Somerset Grade 3 where I had the pleasure of teaching Clayton, Garrett and Alex . I would like to express my sincere sympathy in the passing of your grandfather. Please know that while your grief is all consuming right now, eventually your wonderful memories of your Grandpa will replace your tears. Thinking of you and your parents at this time.

~ Susan Neely (Hanson)

Dear Family, please accept my sincere condolences. Dr. Ion I. Inculet was not only a Legend in his field as it was a great romanian and a world-wide promoter of Romania's values. His support to his native country represents the natural continuation of his father’s life-long commitment to the unity of our nation: Ion C. Inculet, president of National Assembly of Moldova who signed the union of Basarabia with Romania in 9th of April 1918. For me as a researcher in the field of applied electrostatics and electrical engineering Prof. Inculet was always a source of inspiration, an example of dignity, sacrifice and hard work. Romania conferred him the titles of Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy and Honorary President of the Electrostatic Society of Romania. He will be always remebered by us, young romanian researchers as a true model by character, enthusiasm and work ethic. May God rest his soul in peace. Radu Beleca, London, UK.

Dear Family, sending you my sincere condolences. I am Clayton's MESc supervisor at Western and had/have the pleasure of knowing both Ion and Clay. I know they had a special relationship and certainly Ion's work ethic, warmth, and enthusiasm to improve the world clearly live on. Wishing you strength in what must be a difficult time but I know you are a very tight family and that will surely make it easier.
