James Harvey Hassard

July 15, 2010

HASSARD, James Harvey – With great sadness we announce that Harvey passed away surrounded by family at Marian Villa on Thursday, July 15, 2010 in his 94th year. Beloved husband of the late Patricia Hassard (nee Baker) for over 50 years. Loving father of Brian Hassard and his wife Geraldine Sonnesso, Cheryl Hassard, Patricia Hassard, and Paula Hassard and her husband John Steins. Proud and caring grandfather of Caroline and Virginia Reebs.   Cherished companion of the late Ivy Gordon. Remembered affectionately by sisters-in-law Mildred Hassard, Dorothy Hassard and June Baker. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews from the Hassard, Baker and McLeister clans. Predeceased by his beloved daughter Mary, brothers Martin and Ken, and cousins Dorothy and Will Porterfield.

Harvey was born in Acton, Ontario in 1917. He devoted his professional life to teaching, notably in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Ontario, then Fisher Park High School and as a Flight Lieutenant for 2416 Squadron in Ottawa. He obtained a PhD from Michigan State University and ended his career as Associate Professor at Althouse College of Education in London. In his teaching vocation he had a positive impact on the lives of many students over many years. He lived a full life, raising five children, passing on his love of reading, and camping every summer across Canada. There was nothing he enjoyed more than playing the piano at family gatherings, singing in the choir and driving. He was a faithful member of his church, Kiwanis and many volunteer organizations, demonstrating his generous spirit.

Visitation will be held at the Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Tuesday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at Oakridge Presbyterian Church, 970 Oxford Street West, London, on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. Interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery after the service, with reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Harvey are asked to consider Alzheimer Outreach Services of McCormick Home or Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care which provided such extraordinary care during Harvey’s last years. Deepest thanks to Shannon, Lisa and the many caregivers who meant so much to Harvey and our family. Condolences may be mailed to 100 Ridout Street South, Apt. 219, or sent online through www.westviewfuneralchapel.com .

Dear Hassard Family, I remember Mr. Hassard well as my teacher at Fisher Park High School in Ottawa in the 1950's. An excellent instructor, intelligent and well organized. We learned a lot from him. May your memories comfort you in the days ahead. Nancy Peters (former student)
