May, Norma June

March 30th, 2016

Peacefully, on Wednesday, March 30th, 2016 at Chartwell Retirement Residence just 3 weeks short of her 95th birthday. Midland was Mom’s birthplace and where she met and married her high school sweetheart, John May. They managed to squeeze in 73 years of marriage before Dad died in 2014. Mom continued to celebrate their marriage but must have felt it was time to join the love of her life. We hope that Dad knew she was coming because she was definitely heading his way. She will be sadly missed by her son Stephen, favourite daughter-in-law Ruth, grandchildren Kristen, Jason, Jacob, Alexander, Jordan and Joseph, and special nephew Brian. Her beloved daughter Judi died in 2012. She was predeceased by parents Effie and Graham Hager, and siblings Merkley Hager and Irma Downer. Mom spent many years in retail with Evangeline Stores and later Irene Hill. Her sense of style and love of clothes was with her to the end. She and Dad traveled whenever possible and loved winters at their Florida home. Mom was a Byron native for 63 years where her neighbours and church were key components of her life. In recent years, she kept in touch with friends throughout the world using emails but was often frustrated with her much-loved computer when it conspired against her. She was very proud of her grandchildren and demanding of hugs; her camera was a constant. Mom spent many hours on the sidelines at football games and in cold hockey arenas, and loved every minute. Mom had a long and very healthy life. She lived it with a positive attitude and a strong faith; for her, the next part of the journey was a given. Mom’s good health left us with the impression that she was going to be with us forever and her passing caught us by surprise. We are very saddened by her departure but take comfort in its peaceful nature. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service at a later date followed by interment in Midland. Donations to Byron United Church or the charity that means the most to you would be appreciated.
