Sweet, Richard Daryl James

August 12th, 2010

SWEET, Richard Daryl James - At his home peacefully early Thursday morning, Richard, of London, passed away in his sleep after a courageous battle with cancer in his 65th year. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Cathy. Survived by his adoring children Daryl Sweet and his wife Melissa of St. Thomas, Roger Sweet of London and Jacki Fraggis and her husband Louis of Ilderton. Affectionately known by his grandchildren Jessica, Justin, Jocelyn, Ryan, Marissa, Jake and Vanessa as "Grandpa Grouch" he will be dearly missed. Son of Gerald (stepmother Jeanette) and Gloria (all predeceased), Richard was the oldest of eight siblings. Survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law Wilfred and Gladys Carroll of Cambridge, along with many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Born in Peterborough, Ontario on January 26, 1946, he spent many years with Wellie and Zelda Smith of Mountain Grove, Ontario. After moving to the Cambridge area he met and married Cathy on October 13, 1967 and then relocated to St. Thomas in 1970.  During his 30 years at the Ford Talbotville Plant he was a strong Union Advocate and a proud member of the CAW Local 1520. Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman and found himself at home in the great outdoors.  After his retirement from Ford he moved back to the Mountain Grove area, becoming actively involved with the local Royal Canadian Legion. Visitation will be held at the Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Saturday, August 14th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm where the Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, August 15th at 1 pm. Donations may be made to the LHSC Cancer Clinic and the family will be planting a tree in Richard's memory. Online condolences available at www.westviewfuneralchapel.com
